I began photography in the film era. I loved it, but I had a hard time learning from my mistakes due to the time between capture and viewing the result. I also felt frustrated by my lack in the post processing process. I knew as a designer, there were tools at my disposal to make these images better... there simply had to be. Years later, I jumped into the digital age of this craft and it has been instrumental in building my prowess both through the viewfinder and also in executing my final product.
Much of my early work was in the field of Landscape. Growing up in northern New England, I was surrounded by a natural, rugged beauty, and it only made sense that I would be drawn to capture it. I quickly found that it was easy to look digital and even today many new photographers show a lot of prowess in the digital darkroom in order to create shots that are extraordinary in nature, but somehow unbelievable. I try to study the approach of large format film photographers and move slowly through my process; respecting nature's beauty and only trying to illustrate it... not manufacture it.
I was also exposed early on to the magic of slowing down time through long-exposure photography. Each photographer has their own process and recipe. I believe I have my own technique and distinctive look to my long exposure images, whether it be landscape or urban exposures.
Finally, I capture the beauty of a person's portrait - whether it be a simple headshot or an artistic nude. My attempt is to know my subject and capture more than their likeness, but an image which represents their personality as well. I have the utmost respect for any subject willing to sit for my camera.
